Arezzo was one of the most important etruscan cities and was a notable town in roman time and during the Middle Ages. Its past lives on thanks to the many monuments and traditions: the most known of them is the so-called Joust of the Saracens. Arezzo's craftmanship has an ancient tradition in goldsmithery.
In were born Guido Monaco (11th century, who invented the musical notation used today), the poet Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374) and the painter and architect Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574).
