Volterra's history dates back to the Etruscan period and has many Etruscan, Roman and Medieval buildings and remains in its centre: this, along with the beautiful surroundings, makes it one of the most interesting, yet lesser-known small cities of Tuscany.
What really makes unique Volterra is alabaster working: a tradition begun in 3rd century b. C. which still today lives on in artisan workshops.
